"Ok, I know what country guitar chords are. Now what?"

Guitar Chords - Let me make this very clear. In country guitar, you are NOT gonna be playing some really fast solos, with lots of tapping and tremolo picking. Uh-huh. You are going to be strumming chords along to your singing (Or Billy's). Oh, Keep it simple. Let's review some basic chords you'll be using. G chord The G chord is a very popular chord in many country songs. Not a very hard chord. Oh, here's what I do with most chords while singing to Billy Ray Cyrus' songs: I only play the top 4 notes, to get a lower, more "bassy" sound.

E chordThe E chord is a must know! Its really quite simple to play (with a little bit of practice!). Plus, you can change it into an E minor by just lifting up your index finger.

D chordI can safely say, 75% of Billy Ray Cyrus' songs have the D chord in them. Remember to NOT play the 6th string. This chord is vital in country guitar! For those songs where you have to strum fast, or just don't have the accuracy to miss the 6th string everytime, here's a top tip. Hold your guitar normally, but extend your thumb over the top, and place it lightly over the 6th string, effectively muting it.

A chordThis one is a little bit more tricky. Its a "barre" chord. Place your index finger over the 2nd fret on the first 4 strings. Now press down. All 4 string should now be able to produce a clear sound. It doesn't matter if the first string doesn't sound out properly, you won't be needing it. Next, strum strings 5 to 2. Skip 6 and 1. After practice, barring becomes REALLY easy!

C chordThe final basic chord. This one's not very hard. It's not used in many of Billy's songs, but it helps to know! Use my "patented" 6th string muting technique on this one. Other than that, practise!
